Senior Artists Group, Richmond, California

The past few months I have been participating in life drawing sessions on Zoom with the Senior Artists Group in California. An unexpected gift from the pandemic! We meet online every week to draw and paint talented models from the Bay area. A couple times a month we also have a guest artist presentation including demos of working styles. The Group is lead by accomplished artist Jiajun (JJ) Lu.

The Group has ongoing, online shows on their website gallery. Beautiful, affordable, original artworks. Take a look when you have a moment.

Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, lobby installation

coco-connolly-dance-watercolor-installation---1.jpg

Since the 1970s, dancers have stood in this space awaiting the elevator or climbed the now long-gone marble staircase to train, practice and perform — or maybe even catch a glimpse of Prince, who graced the space on the fifth floor.

The photographs by Erik Saulitis and Bill Cameron feature movement, time passing or held, intention,  reaching, dreaming and connecting. The proximity of this space at 528 Hennepin Avenue to the powerful Mississippi River pulls and draws the dancers’ liquid-like fascia.

The watercolor paintings by Coco Connolly continue this point of view, reflecting the artist’s interest in  gestures and how body positions communicate emotion. Connolly experimented with adding watercolor to the large photographs, introducing a layer of atmosphere and suggestion of place.

This work is presented by Hennepin Theatre Trust in collaboration with the Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts, with support from the City of Minneapolis Great Streets Program.

ICON SAM: TEMPLE DANCES

  • The Cowles Center for the Performing Arts (map)
  • Google Calendar ICS

I have a moment of an art installation in this amazing, immersive dance experience... "ICON SAM: Temple Dances is an historical, hysterical romp that takes place in the doorways, studios, alleys, and hallways of 528 Hennepin Avenue. Now The Cowles Center for Dance & the Performing Arts, this building has been many things, most notably, a Masonic Temple. The roaming show features choreography by award-winning local dancemakers Wynn Fricke, HIJACK, Lise Houlton, Judith Howard, Judith Brin Ingber, STRONGmovement, Sossy Mechanics, Sally Rousse, and others..."

Sally Rousse asked me to create something based on my long association with the Masonic Temple on 6th and Hennepin in downtown Minneapolis, formerly Hennepin Center for the Arts now The Cowles Center for Dance and the Performing Arts. She gave me a room on the 5th floor where I've staged a tableau in homage to my memory of a performance at James Sewell Ballet Tek Box theater. The performance featured Nicky Coelho dancing in a piece choreographed by Myron Johnson, The Indestructible Lady Penrose. It knocked my socks off.
